Dr. Gary Mukai has been practicing optometry in Fresno since 1974. He was originally a partner of Dr. George Miyake from 1974 to 1992. Dr. Miyake had a busy, established practice that was started in 1949. Their practice was located in downtown Fresno until 1985. The practice then moved to East Shaw Avenue just east of Fashion Faire Shopping Center. In 1990 the practice took on the identity of East Shaw Optometric Group and absorbed the practices of Dr. Gilbert Stocks, Dr. Dewey Jan, and Dr. Robert Hlywa. Dr. Rick W. Ideta

Dr. Rick Ideta specializes in General Optometry, contact lenses, children's vision, vision therapy and sports vision. He earned his Optometric Degree from Pacific University College of Optometry in 1986. After 10 years in solo private practice, Dr. Ideta formed a partnership with Dr. Gary Mukai in 1996 under the group name East Shaw Optometric Group. In March, 2010, the partnership of Dr. Ideta and Dr. Mukai moved to its present location of 7215 N. First Street under the new name of Aloha Family Optometric Group. Dr. Alyssa M. Yamamoto joins Aloha Family Optometric Group in providing excellent comprehensive eye care to the Central Valley. During her optometric education, she focused on general optometry, contact lenses, and ocular disease treatment and management. Dr. Yamamoto’s optometric training includes various diverse modes of practice including a community health center, military hospital, Veterans Affairs medical center, private practice and Indian Health Services hospital. Dr. Yamamoto is no stranger to our practice, as she previously worked here as an Optometric Assistant before attending Optometry school in Southern California. Please call our office if you experience loss of vision, double vision, swelling, infection or any eye emergency, contact us immediately for guidance. We’ll help you with the best treatment to prevent complications and promote long-lasting clear eyesight.

Use your best judgment on urgency – find the nearest emergency room or review our emergency page for tips.

In an effort to further protect our patients and staff, we are taking the following precautions at our office:

When you arrive in the office for your appointment:

  1. The door will remain locked and open only for patients that have been initially screened
  2. Careful Screening:  All persons entering the office will be screened for symptoms of COVID-19 by 1) being asked a series of screening questions and 2) their temperature will be taken before entering the office.  If the patient's temperature is greater or equal to 100.4 degrees F (38 degrees C), that person will be denied entrance and asked to see their primary care physician.
  3. No additional family, friends, etc will be allowed to accompany the patient into the office
    1. *Exception: children and others requiring assistance - 1 single parent or accompanied guardian allowed
  4. We ask that you please wear cloth or medical MASKS when entering our office. A mask will be required for entry through the door.
  5.  We will be implementing a *$50 “No Show Fee”* for no shows or cancellations if we are not notified at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.

Although there may be some changes to your normal visit to our office, we assure you that we are doing our best to follow all CDC, California Department of Public Health, California Optometric Association and local public health guidelines to keep our patients, staff and community safe without compromising our standard of excellence and quality during this time.
